Weekend picks: Dragon boat races at Lake Phalen

Looking for things to do this weekend? We've got you covered!

You can’t go wrong with this fun and festive celebration of Asian-Pacific cultures, happening this Saturday from 9am to 7pm at Lake Phalen in Saint Paul.

A key part of the Dragon Festival are the dragon boat races, a tradition that dates back 2400 years to China. Marvel at the intricately decorated boats, and cheer on your favorite in this friendly competition. Enjoy delicious food, take in some beautiful cultural performances, and learn more about Asian Pacific traditions. This event is free to attend. Vendor and food purchases will be available.

Twin Cities music and coffee lovers, the second annual Payne Ave Fest is happening this Saturday at the beloved Caydence Records & Coffee in Saint Paul. This year offers a little twist (sort of like the cafe’s delicious Polyphia; a peanut butter, lemon zest iced latte). The Polyrhythmic Art’s annual summit, Demo Days, will be combining the all-ages music festival with on-stage interviews on how these artists manage burnout, writer’s block, and perfectionism. Come for the caffeine, stay for the music, vibes, and insight – from Noon to 11pm. Tickets are $18 in advance. $20 at the door.

Post construction of the I-94 highway, Central Village Park became sacred land for former homeowners of the historic Rondo community after navigating displacement. This community celebration marks the park’s 50th anniversary with heartfelt storytelling of its history and growth over the decades. Bring your friends and family to hold space, double dutch, rollerskate, play, and eat – for free. Commemorate this milestone this Saturday from 3pm to 5pm, and Sunday from 1pm to 3pm.

Show some love to the Dakota community at the Big Red Barn Farmers Market this Sunday from 9am to 1pm. Witness Indigenous expressions of culture, celebration and pride, while you meet your shopping needs with local farmers and Native vendors and makers. This event is located outside the Maplewood Area Historical Society Museum and is free and open to the public.

Give back to the community this Saturday with a community clean-up from 10am to noon in the North Loop at Ȟaȟá Wakpádaŋ, also known as Bassett Creek. Learn about the creek and its connection to Dakota culture. Meet at 402 West River Parkway for litter pick-up and invasive species removal. All supplies will be provided. And for added motivation, participants get free sunflower cookies from the Indigenous vendor, NATIFs.
