Saint Paul, MN - The City of St. Paul has joined a lawsuit filed by the city of San Francisco, challenging the Trump administration's attempts to illegally use federal funds as leverage to force local law enforcement to act as federal agents.
Mayor Melvin Carter said today, “We do not accept the proposal of this executive order, unlawfully holding hostage, federal funds as ransom against an unlawful political demand.” The city of Minneapolis and the Attorney General have also sued the Trump Administration.
East Side Council Woman Nelsie Yang said during the press conference "Let me be clear. St. Paul will not be silent, and that's exactly why today I am extremely proud to be amongst elected officials, leaders, staff, community members, and friends, who stand stand ready to fight against Trump's threats to withhold over 200 million of federal funding from our sanctuary city and other cities like ours."
This lawsuit follows an announcement by the Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison who says he has already sued the Trump Administration six times.
"This coercion is called commandeering. The U.S. Supreme Court has specifically held that the 10th amendment to the US Constitution prohibits commandeering," says the city attorney. "By attempting to dictate how local jurisdictions should allocate their limited resources, the executive branch is essentially legislating from the executive. This disrupts the constitutional balance between our branches of the government."
