Protestors gathered in Minneapolis late last week to show solidarity for “The People’s Summit,” an event created as an alternative to the Annual Summit of the Americas, held in Los Angeles. This is the first time the United States has hosted the Summit of the Americas, but President Biden barred some countries from participating.
“The People’s Summit directly challenges the imperiousness of the Summit of the Americas, to which the leaders of the socialist countries of Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Cuba are not invited,” said John Reuss, a member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. “Does that sound very democratic to you?”
The presidents of Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala ultimately declined the invitation to attend, sending government representatives in their place.
In addition to local protests, Minnesota activists traveled to Los Angeles to attend “The People’s Summit.”
“We’re marching through the streets of downtown L.A.” said civil rights activist Nekima Levy Armstrong as she live-streamed the event on social media. “There are lots of people here from around the country advocating for different social, racial justice and economic issues.”
Participants in the People’s Summit discussed food sovereignty, climate justice, and the abolition of police and prisons.
