A shooting at a punkhouse in south Minneapolis left one person dead and six injured on Friday night.
Dozens of people were at the house – known as “Nudieland” – for a backyard concert when shots were fired at approximately 10:15 p.m. By the time police arrived on scene, the shooters had fled. The shooters remain at large.
"We believe the shooting was targeted and we have two males that fled northbound through the alleyway after the shooting,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said.
Felix Havoc, a local record store owner and member of the 90’s punk rock band Destroy!, wrote that the shooting “was not a robbery or carjacking gone wrong, this was a straight up hate crime by ignorant people who hate others because they are different.”
The person killed was August Golden, a member of the band Scrounge, which frequently played at Nudieland. A gofundme has been started to support his partner after his death.
“Caitlin is constantly taking care of others, and if you’ve ever met her, she’s probably made you laugh, made you a meal, or been supportive of your creative project. She’s given so much to the community, it’s her turn to be supported,” organizer Sanam Sadeghi wrote.
Another gofundme is raising money for the victims who were shot and injured Friday as well as the residents of Nudieland, August’s family and loved ones, and others affected. Money will go toward medical bills, lost wages, rent, food and other basic needs.
One of the victims remains in critical condition.
The U.S. has seen 440 mass shootings in 2023; five of which took place in the Twin Cities.
