Earlier this year Nadine Walker opened Nadine’s Plus Size Boutique in Brooklyn Park to expand urban true-to-fit clothing options for plus size women. Walker says her experience as a Black plus size woman often came with limited clothing options at affordable prices. She says the fashion world prioritizes and tailors its urban wear to smaller frames. As a result, Walker says she remembers having to choose between clothing that didn’t reflect her style or high prices due to limited availability.
“I just didn't think it was okay for us to have to pay so much just to look and feel good.
It's important to be inclusive, especially for my plus size women. We can rock stuff too, and look just as good as anybody else.”
Walker says her grandmother taught her that how she presents herself is a form of self respect. The shop features everything from casual to dressy clothing, as well as lounge and swimwear, and accessories. Walker says it's important to offer an array of options.
“I feel Black women were the pioneers of confidence in being plus size.” Walker continues. “They come in and they're like, oh my God, this is cute! We need more of this stuff! It makes me feel good. Actually, it makes me feel good when they come in and they're skeptical.”
The shop is hosting a Summer “Sip and Shop” on July 15 from 12-6pm. Walker says the event will showcase new clothing arrivals and select discounted items that will leave plus-sized women feeling bold, beautiful, and confident. The event will also feature vendors, BBQ, and craft beverages.
Nadine’s Plus Size Boutique is located at 1444 85th St Avenue North in Brooklyn Park.
